HARARE – Deputy Minister of Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services Dr. Energy Mutodi was fired by President Mnangagwa yesterday, TSTnews reports.

The sacking of the junior minister was announced by Permanent Secretary, Presidential Communications Mrs. R. Chikowore in a statement seen by TSTnews.

The termination of Mutodi’s contract was effected immediately in terms of  Section 108(19) of the Constitution of Zimbabwe.

TSTnews gathered from reliable sources in government that the appointing authority, President Mnangagwa gave in to pressure to drop the minister for his string of reckless statements that were increasingly bringing government standing in disrepute.

Mutodi posted a reckless tweet mocking the three abducted MDC Alliance youths drawing the ire of Zimbabweans across the globe.

He said: ” Details emerge MDC youths Joana Mamombe, Netsai Marova and Cecilia Chimbiri went out for a romantic night to Bindura with their lovers who are artisanal miners. They parked their car at a police station for safety but tragedy struck when they demanded foreign currency for services.”

Former Higher and Tertiary Education Minister Professor Jonathan Moyo angrily lashed at former Deputy Minister Mutodi.

He said:” Mutodi you are a dog ( in Shona) and a disgrace to humanity. If your appointing authority, Mnangagwa does not fire you for this, he will confirm that he too is a disgrace to humanity and must go with Zanu PF.”

TSTnews noted that the former minister used to post bizarre statements similar to those of Mutodi during his tenure in government, for example he once said abducted Itai Dzamara had faked his disappearance and was spotted in Botswana.

The fired Mutodi caused friction in government a couple of weeks back when he clashed with his senior counterparts Ministers Mutsvangwa and Moyo over his undiplomatic utterances about Tanzania’s Covid-19 strategies.

Minister of Foreign Relations S. B. Moyo issued a statement distancing government from Mutodi’s statement.

In response, Mutodi posted that he was no longer safe as he feared Moyo and Mutsvangwa may kill him.

TSTnews is reliably informed that Mutodi’s utterances are not the reason for his dismissal as other ministers usually say similar statements against MDC and western countries.

Defence and War Veterans Minister, Oppah Muchinguri-Kashiri celebrated that Covid-19 was a punishment from God to the western countries for imposing economic sanctions on Zimbabwe.

President Mnangagwa only issued a veiled statement downplaying Muchinguri-Kashiri gaffe.

TSTnews is reliably informed that Mutodi belongs to the faction of powerful VP Chiwenga angling to take over power from President Mnangagwa and this triggered his sacking.

Political commentator Pedzisai Ruhanya said: “Mutodi is good riddance but most fundamentally the Zanu PF system that allows rights abuses sexual attacks against women and the general corruption and decomposition of the political must fall.”
