The Local Solutions Council (LSC) calls on the Government to make it mandatory for people to wear face masks or face coverings in public. Research has shown that face masks or face coverings can go a long way in combating the spread of the coronavirus pandemic. The use of face masks by the public, together with social distancing and handwashing, prevents the transmission of coronavirus and saves lives.
Covid-19 is spread from aerosols (tiny viral particles); we breathe in aerosols in crowded places like trains and buses, we touch our face inadvertently numerous times with potentially infected hands. Research has shown that face masks or face coverings will protect against this and prevent asymptomatic people from spreading coronavirus. And it will even be more crucial to wear face masks or face coverings in public when the Government eases the lockdown to prevent a resurgence of cases.
The LSC urges the Government through the Ministry of Health to take a lead in providing expertise to enable the making of face masks or face coverings either at home or by the corporate sector. The World Health Organisation acknowledges that face masks and face coverings can reduce the spread of diseases.
Consequently, the LSC calls on the Government to protect lives by implementing a comprehensive strategy of social distancing, handwashing, mask-wearing and protecting the vulnerable.
