LSC Press Release Number – 117

Zimbabwe Police must UPHOLD the rule of law

Harare, Zimbabwe., November 21, 2019

The Local Solutions Council (LSC) strongly condemns the unwarranted attack on defenceless and peaceful citizens exercising their constitutional right to assembly and free speech. We note with uttermost dismay the unwarranted police brutality against MDC Alliance supporters and members of the public outside the Morgan Tsvangirai House.

The Local Solutions Council deduces that brutality against citizens proves that the reforms that are currently being pursued by the Mnangagwa Administration are not sincere. Moreover; the Zimbabwe Government has evidently shown that it does not respect the rule of law as the police continue to deny the opposition and civil society their rights to assembly and free speech as enshrined in the constitution.

The brutal attack by the police left a gory of digital footprints of injured and traumatized Citizens. This state suppression smacks of breaches of the law and gross violation of human rights by the police who are supposed to act as law enforcement officers. Therefore; the Local Solutions Council calls for the immediate arrest of all police officers who committed this heinous crime. We also call upon SADC to speak out against this brutality by security agents on innocent citizens of a SADC state.

Hence, As Zimbabwe’s leading Think tank, the Local Solutions Council posits that for the nation to turn around its economic fortunes and get on a path of inclusive and sustainable development, citizens must be free to exercise their rights, civic space must be open and Government must respect the RULE OF LAW as guaranteed in the Constitution. Consequently, the Local Solutions Council calls on the Mnangagwa Administration and the Zimbabwe Police to UPHOLD the rule of law and to guarantee citizens their constitutional rights to assembly and free speech.
