LSC condemns Dr Magombeyi’s Abduction
Harare, Zimbabwe., September 15, 2019
The Local Solutions Council strongly condemns the ABDUCTION and disappearance of the Acting President of the Zimbabwe Hospital Doctors Association, Dr Peter Magombeyi. He was allegedly abducted on September 14 at 10:19 pm at his Budiriro home by suspected state security agents after receiving threats on his mobile phone from a traceable number. This abduction comes on the eve of International Day of Democracy and on the back of recent abductions & torture of activists, including comedians.
The Local Solutions Council would like to urge the Government of Zimbabwe to safeguard the rights of all Zimbabweans, ensure that Dr Magombeyi is immediately released, and his abductors face due process in a court of law. Moreover, these abductions are contrary to democracy, the rule of law and respect of citizens’ rights as enshrined in Zimbabwe’s Constitution, various regional and international statutes.
We would also like to remind the Zimbabwe Government that democracy can only function if participation and trust between democratic state institutions, government and citizens are guaranteed. Above all, abductions undermine President Mnangagwa’s reengagement agenda and claims of reform.
As Zimbabwe’s leading Think tank, the Local Solutions Council understands that for the nation to turn around its economic fortunes and get on a path of inclusive and sustainable development, citizens must be free to exercise their rights and civic space must be open.
Consequently, the Local Solutions Council calls for the immediate RELEASE of Dr Magombeyi.
