The rise of Emmerson Mnangagwa to the Presidency on 24 November 2017 ushered in renewed hope amongst the Citizenry that life in Zimbabwe would immensely improve. Zimbabweans had for decades greatly suffered from Robert Mugabe’s dictatorship and failed Administration and many in the country felt that opportunities would emerge with the coming in of the Mnangagwa Administration.
From the frying pan into the fire
Mnangagwa’s twelve months in Office have turned out to be worse off than the twilight of Mugabe’s ruinous rule. From the onset, President Mnangagwa went out on a worldwide charm offensive. He boasted that his was a “New Dispensation”, which was focusing on “Servant leadership”. He presented himself as a listening President who sought to positively change the lives of ordinary Zimbabweans.

He told every potential investor, foreigner and Diplomat that: “Zimbabwe is open for business”. Little did the world knew that Mnangagwa was selling them a dummy. He simply did not care about transforming the lives of the people whom he has a heightened and singular Constitutional obligation to serve, govern and protect. From his first day in Office, Mnangagwa has preached things that his Government does not practice.
His government says one thing in front of the media and does completely the opposite. The Zimbabwean Government seems as if it doesn’t know that actions actually speak louder than words. The people are not fools, they are just scared of the State’s brutality and instruments of oppression that have so far sustained Mnangagwa’s reign.
Zimbabwe’s Government has totally failed to craft and wholly implement policies that are meant to uplift the people. Governments, the world over are put in place to enable the people of a nation to live in safety and happiness. The Government must exist for the interests of the governed, not for the governors.
Sadly, the Zimbabwean Government does exactly the opposite of what is expected from it. Zimbabwe is in a worse state than what it was when Mnangagwa took over from Mugabe. The cost of living has unbearably rose. All commodities (both basic and luxury) are either scarce or accessible at extortionate prices.
All this is happening while the entire Government is pretending not to be seeing how bad things are. To the Government Officials, things in Zimbabwe are normal and any voices of dissent must be ruthlessly silenced. The much-dreaded Military Intelligence and Central Intelligence operatives are out in full force to ensure that fear is instilled within the Citizens and no one would dare say anything against Government failures. Instead of solving the problems affecting the ordinary man on the street, the Government is busy lying to the World that life has changed for the better in Zimbabwe.
Nowhere to run
While Zimbabwe’s economy is burning, the Diplomatic Community is keen on giving Zimbabwe’s government more time to solve the problems that are believed to have been created by Mugabe. They seem to forget that Mnangagwa was an integral part of Mugabe’s regime and is equally responsible through acts of omission or commission for anything bad that was done during that time and it will be hard for him to proffer any meaningful solutions or change.
The bulk of Mnangagwa’s Senior Government officials have been part of the Government since Zimbabwe attained Independence. These men and women in Government appear not to have met their Damascus moment. They are old wine in new skins and nothing better can be expected from them.
The much touted “Austerity for prosperity budget” seems to be ignoring that by and large, Zimbabweans have never enjoyed the fruits of their hard work. Zimbabweans have mostly been victims of Government’s inefficiencies since attainment of Independence. Painfully, most countries are keen on giving Mnangagwa and his failed Government more time.
What they do not know is that they are dealing with a Government that packages itself as pro-people yet it is exactly the opposite. The Zimbabwean Government is just there for the enrichment of the few elite group who are fortunate enough to be a part of it. For the rest of the people, it’s just unending suffering and there is nowhere to run to.
Thirty-eight years after Independence, Zimbabwe is getting worse by each passing day. The State appears to be captured by ZANU PF. Every Government Institution, Statutory Body and Independent Commission is controlled by and actually serves the ZANU PF leadership.
There is not any one Institution that sides with the suffering masses and dare to go against the leaders of ZANU PF. The people are on their own, their cries are falling on deaf ears, those with the mandate to protect them have turned out to be oppressors. Its plainly clear that the current government has turned out to be a failure.
